The Rhone department is situated in the Rhone-Alpes region of south-east France. It is in the north-western side of the region with the Burgundy region to the north and the Ardeche to the west. It is named after the Rhone river which crosses the department from north to south.
It rises in the Swiss Alps, passes through Lake Geneva and then runs through south eastern France. At Arles, near its mouth on the Mediterranean Sea, the river divides into two branches, known as the Grand Rhône and the Petit Rhône. The resulting delta constitutes the Camargue region.
