Testers Guide - Evaluating the Dog. During the ATTS temperament evaluation every dog is scored at each substation by a chief tester, two testers and up to three apprentice testers. The evaluators are spread out over the field to observe the dog from different angles.
Author: Helen Brown. Temperament assessment in companion animals is an important welfare issue, and more so for dogs than any other species. In this essay the purpose and process of the tests will be outlined, followed by a discussion of the potential positive and negative welfare implications.
For example, tests using motivator-oriented stimuli often seek to measure specific cognitive traits, but several other factors may affect dogs’ performance in these tests. Over the course of a test battery, dogs are likely to have different attention, motivation, and energy characteristics and therefore may show poorer performance in later tests.
