Researchers in New Zealand, and around the world, are beginning to understand the different ways our communities will be impacted by climate change. Some of the impacts are already clear, for example, sea-level rise and coastal erosion. Others are not so clear.
Improved climate projections for New Zealand reinforce earlier findings that higher greenhouse gas concentrations leading to increasing radiative forcing will likely cause larger degrees of change for New Zealand’s climate and its various facets, including means, extremes, frequencies, and shifts in patterns.

Oct 1, 2020 · New Zealand’s weather and climate is most influenced by three oscillations: El Niño Southern Oscillation (with El Niño, La Niña, and neutral phases), Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation, and Southern Annular Mode (SAM).
Understanding future climate change. We seek to understand future climate change by focusing on the emergence of unusual temperatures and extreme weather events in places where people live. Climate science and policy. We frame research questions so they can inform policymakers and other stakeholders involved in real-world decision-making.
New Zealand’s climate is warming. Annual average temperature increased at 28 of 30 sites across the country and at all 30 during winter. Eighteen of the 30 sites had a very likely increasing trend in the number of heatwave days, while 12 of 30 had a very likely decreasing number of frost days.
Auckland's climate change future. Auckland’s temperature is projected to increase by between 1.5 and 3.75 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, depending on the pace and scale of change in our global emissions.
