A Kind of Magic is the seventh episode of the second season of Quantum Leap, and the twenty-fifth episode of the series overall. It aired on December 6, 2023.
Ben leaps back to 1692 -- the farthest he's ever been -- where he finds himself on trial for practicing witchcraft; with limited records online, the team must race to save him before he's put to death.
In the present, Rachel installs new firmware on the quantum chip that allows them to keep tracking Ben without leaking data to her employer.
1692: Ben leaps into Elizabeth, a teenage girl in Middle Towne, MA, near Salem. Her friends are teasing her for being in love with William, the magistrate's son. Elizabeth is a servant to Goody, roughly the same age. She approaches, and the friends are tense around her.
With Ben still not ready to see Addison, It's Ian's turn to be hologram. Ian wants to gossip about the kiss with Hannah, but Ben is reluctant to talk when Addison can observe. He says he's left that part of his life behind him. Addison watches, regretfully.
Ben and Goody go to a funeral service for Josiah, Goody's husband. Goody loved him, but many blame her for his death. The reverend mentions a drought and "affliction" striking the town, which killed Josiah and others. Some in town believe it's a punishment from God, and there are whispers that Goody is a witch.
The Magistrate sits next to Ben. He says that William has a fever, as Josiah did. He asks if Goody was acting like a witch recently. Ziggy says they burn Goody at the stake. William then collapses, and the magistrate immediately blames Goody. Ben revives him with CPR, which gets him also labeled a witch. Townspeople begin testifying that Goody has shown signs of witchcraft, including the smell of sulphur.
An Irish apothecary, Morgan, denounces all of this as nonsense. That gets her accused as well. In a speedy trial, the magistrate says Goody can either confess or be burned at the stake. Goody and Morgan both deny witchcraft. Jenn returns with books from the library. She enters the leap and says they should just confess - all three of them will lose their property, but their lives will be spared.
