The American Band is a community band based in Providence, Rhode Island. It was founded as a military band in 1837 by Joseph C. Greene. During its early years, the members were the highest paid in the country - even higher than the New York Philharmonic in its first season.
Apr 15, 2013 · The American Band, founded by D.W. Reeves, is a symphonic concert band comprised of over 50 adult musicians based in Providence, Rhode Island. Our primary repertoire is marches, classical band music, show tunes, and popular music. Concerts are performed year round.
Since 1978 the Band has been performing between 15 to 20 concerts each year around Rhode Island and southern New England, continuing the proud tradition begun in 1837. Since the death of Dr. Marciniak in May of 1996 the band was under the baton of Dr. Gene Pollart of the University of Rhode Island until his retirement in April of 2013.
Musicians – The American Band. Our Conductor: Brian Cardany. Dr. Brian Cardany is the Director of Bands at the University of Rhode Island where he conducts the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Alumni Wind Ensemble, directs the athletic bands, and teaches courses in music education and conducting.
One of the oldest community musical organizations in the United States, the American Band of Providence, was incorporated in 1837 as a 15-piece ensemble of brass instruments and drums under the directorship of Joseph C. Greene, a famed soloist on the keyed bugle.
