Week 1: 14/10 to 20/10
Monday: Heavy outbreaks of rain in the south clear eastwards to leave dry conditions in much of the UK. However, there will be some patchy spells of rain in northern and western Scotland. Chilly in central and northern areas, quite mild in the south. Tuesday: Dry in central and eastern England. Elsewhere the risk of rain increases through the day, with some heavy outbreaks developing in south western Britain and Northern Ireland. Wednesday: Heavy rain pushes northwards, but there will be some...
Week 2: 21/10 to 27/10
Rain is possible in all regions, especially early in the week. However, wet periods are expected to be the most frequent in the north. In the south the trend is towards drier weather developing as the week progresses. Temperatures are forecast to be above the seasonal average, but there is a chance of the nights becoming quite cold later on. Forecast confidence is low.
Week 1
Through the first few days high pressure will be centred to the southeast of the UK, leading to a southerly flow which will pull very warm air northwards from southern Europe. However, pressure will be steadily falling as Atlantic disturbances start encroaching. A west or southwesterly flow becomes established during the second half of the week. The chart below is from the GFS model. It shows pressure and precipitation at 15:00, Tuesday 15th October.
Week 2
High pressure is forecast to be centred to the south. Therefore, Atlantic disturbances have more influence in the north of the UK than the south. A predominantly southwesterly flow suggests it will be quite mild, but chilly nights would be likely if the high pressure built farther north. The chart below shows the GEFS forecast mean surface level pressure on Wednesday 23rd October.
