Pearl Thompson (born Paul Stephen Thompson; [1] 8 November 1957) is an English musician and artist. Thompson is best known as a member of the English alternative rock band The Cure from 1983–1993 and 2005–2011, during which he was credited as Porl Thompson and played mainly guitar with occasional keyboards and saxophone.
Shortly afterwards, Porl Thompson played his last gig with Easy Cure (though he would return for stints in 1983-94 and 2005-08). The guitarist’s flamboyant proficiency had become incompatible with Smith’s vision. The band name also submitted to the new minimalism. They were now simply The Cure.
Immediately after the tour ended, guitarist Porl Thompson left the band again (this time with a smile!), and The Cure headlined the XFM 'Great Xpectations' Show in London's Finsbury Park as a quartet.
