   Where did polders come from?

   • In the mid-20th century the state commissioned the realisation of polders in the then “Southern Sea” (Zuiderzee) that with the construction of dykes now is a lake (called IJsselmeer). The then Zuiderzee was and is in the centre of the country (yellow circle, Figure 2) and the Government indeed reclaimed land from the (shallow) sea.
