    1979–1986

    Typography:  Avant Garde Gothic Book Launched:  1979 Pixar began in 1979 as The Graphics Group, a part of the computer division of Lucasfilm.

    1986–1994

    Typography:  Custom Launched:  February 3, 1986 On February 3, 1986, Apple Computer co-founder Steve Jobs acquired the company and renamed it Pixar. Its first logo, based on the design of their image computers, was nicknamed "the BSD" (short for "Beveled Square with a Dent"), a play on the Berkeley Software Distribution version of Unix that Pixar used. The wordmark was created by John Lasseter with a stone cutter.

    1994–present

    Typography:  Charlemagne Bold Launched:  November 22, 1995 During production of Toy Story in 1994, Pixar began referring to itself as Pixar Animation Studios, and dropped the square logo in favor of a wordmark set in the Charlemagne Bold typeface. This logo was created by current Pixar CCO Pete Docter. The character Luxo Jr. became a mascot and appeared in the on-screen logo for every opening and closing of Pixar films, starting with the closing logos of Toy Story (1995).

  5. Closing Variants: The logo plays as normal, but instead of fading it out, the light slowly dims until it's completely dark. Luxo Jr.'s light is still on though, but he then turns off. Starting in 2008, the closing variant has the text "ANIMATION STUDIOS" fade in a little later than the opening logo.
