Sumner High School won the 1969 4A Kansas State High School Activities Association boys basketball championship. [ 12 ] Sumner Academy has won four Kansas State High School Activities Association boys basketball championships, which were in 1998, 2000, 2010, and 2011.
The first state basketball tournament under the direction of the KSHSAA was held at Emporia State Teachers’ College in 1912 and was won by the Reno County High School team of Nickerson. Prior to that time, a statewide invitation tournament was held at the University of Kansas.
