- PHAROAH'S ARMY, based on a supposedly true Kentucky legend, is a war movie without the war. For those who don't fight the battles but still have to take sides, the inner struggles can be as heartbreaking as the war itself. Director Robby Henson's stark, unsentimental telling of the story has a powerful emotional impact.

Sarah Anders (Patricia Clarkson) and her teenage son are trying to survive on their small farm in Kentucky’s Cumberland Gap while her husband is off fighting for the South during the Civil War. Then Capt. Abston (Chris Cooper) and his small band of Union cavalrymen show up, foraging for supplies.
The characters come to embody all of the tensions, hatreds and mistrust that are fueling the Civil War beyond this isolated Kentucky valley. But Captain John Abston’s morally conflicted personality makes his character more complex and more human than any Northerner Sarah Anders can envision.
