   • In mid-January 1945, Auschwitz was evacuated and Peter van Pels and Otto Frank had to say goodbye tp each other. A few days after arriving in Mauthausen, Peter was transferred to Melk subcamp to perform forced labour. In April 1945, he was brought back to Mauthausen, very ill. Peter was brought back from Melk to Mauthausen on 11 April 1945.

   How old was Peter van Pels when he died?

   • The hard labour in the mines of the Melk satellite camp took its toll. Peter fell ill and ended up in the sick barracks. The camp was liberated by American troops on 5 May 1945. According to a list kept by the medical staff, Peter van Pels died on 10 May 1945. He was 18 years old.
