I don't now the rule exactly, but it may parallel the English structure where you mention the other party before you mention yourself ( "My family and I" [correct]... rather than "Me and my family" [incorrect]). "Yo y mi familia" sounds weird to me. I have often heard however, "mi familia y yo". I would go with the second option.
