Paul Merton in Galton and Simpson's... is a British comedy television show that ran from 26 January 1996 to 21 October 1997. It stars Paul Merton, re-performing a number of classic comedy scripts written by the duo Galton and Simpson ( Ray Galton and Alan Simpson ), including some originally written for Tony Hancock.

As everyone knows, BBC lifts have a maxium capacity of eight people. In a rush, Paul jams himself in as a ninth occupant and causes the lift to be stuck between floors. Feeling guilty, Paul tries to provide some entertainment while they wait to be rescued
Merton is not a situation comedian, specialising more in the surreal or witty topical aside, and this all too evident from virtually all the episodes where the delivery seems stiff and forced, and if it were not for the supporting cast, would be painful to work your way through.
