In 1923 the Alexander Cowie Galleries had their inception in the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Mr. Cowie began by exhibiting contemporary American, 18th-century English and 19th-century French paintings and sculpture. Occasional works by such figures as Mary Cassatt, Camille Pissarro and Renoir were not well received.
