The novel explores the sense of smell and its relationship with the emotional meanings that scents may have.
Patrick Süskind was born in Ambach in 1949. His father was a writer, journalist and translator. He studied history at university first in Munich and then in Aix-en-Provence. It was while in Aix-en-Provence that he collected materials that he would later use in his novel Das Parfum (Perfume).
