Patrick Breen, 51, was rescued by John Stark of the Third Relief after being abandoned by the Second Relief at Starved Camp. Upon his arrival in California, he befriended fellow Irish emigrant Martin Murphy, Jr., who had a ranch on the Cosumnes River, south of present Elk Grove, California.
Patrick sold their property in Iowa and outfitted the family for the journey, and set out in three wagons to rendezvous with other emigrants in the spring of 1846. They were accompanied by their friend and neighbor, Patrick Dolan.
As members of the ill-fated Donner Party, Patrick and Margaret Breen along with their seven children had been stranded in the Sierra Nevada for 111 days without supplies during the extraordinary snows of 1846.
