As I watched writer/director Rebecca Hall ’s adaption of Nella Larsen ’s 1929 novella, Passing, I couldn’t stop thinking about the story in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” where “a colored man” named Eliza Cottor sold his soul to the Devil.
