Very low solute concentrations are often expressed using appropriately small units such as parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb). Like percentage (“part per hundred”) units, ppm and ppb may be defined in terms of masses, volumes, or mixed mass-volume units.
- Molarity and Formality. Both molarity and formality express concentration as moles of solute per liter of solution; however, there is a subtle difference between them.
- Normality. Normality is a concentration unit that no longer is in common use; however, because you may encounter normality in older handbooks of analytical methods, it is helpful to understand its meaning.
