Apr 27, 2023 · Browse creative photo wall ideas to inspire your arrangements of art and family photos displaying memorable moments — like your wedding, graduation or travels.
- Choose your wall. First things first, choose where you are going to create your gallery wall. There is no shortage of possibilities – an alcove or nook, above a piece of furniture, on the stairs, or in a hallway.
- Discover your gallery wall style. There are no end of different styles of gallery wall about, from galleries with clean, uniform lines like the one I’ve created above, to more eclectic arrangements.
- Consider the colours. Before purchasing frames or printing photos think about your colour scheme. What colour is the wall? What colours do you have in the rest of the room?
- Find a thread of consistency. At this stage you should already have an idea of how you’d like your finished gallery to look, and the type of frames that will match the style of the room.
- Highlight Your Wedding Day. Newlyweds and married couples, don’t let your wedding photos fade away on the internet or just sit on a hard drive. Instead, print them—preferably in black and white for a nostalgic touch—and let them steal the show in simple picture frames.
- Play It Safe, but Be Expressive. This gallery wall strikes the perfect balance between catchy and contained. The black-and-white images keep everything cohesive.
- A Trip Down Memory Lane (Travels Version) Traveling as a family is hard enough; imagine trying to take aesthetically pleasing pictures on top of that. If you’re an adventurous family, you have every right to flaunt your vacay snaps all over your walls.
- Pick a Theme. While we are big fans of bold and creative photo walls, we also love a neat and put-together display. The key is to use the same filter—or a selected color scheme—on your family photos for a consistent look.
- Mix up the frames, both in size and style. If you want to be able to add frames later on, it’s best to start out with a good mix, so you won’t be able to tell which frames are the newest additions.
- Hang your first frame slightly off-center and go from there. It’s rare that I have a master plan when I’m creating a collected family photo wall like this, especially one that I plan to keep building on over time.
- Don’t fret too much over spacing. Perfection and collection are two words that don’t really go that well together, in my opinion. If you’re planning to continue building your gallery wall over time, I think it’s a waste of precious brain space to fret too much over spacing.
- A color story is nice. I’ve got a black, white and gold thing going here. But maybe you want to use color photos. If so, you many want to stick to one color for your frames.
- Candid + Posed. Professionally shot and posed family photos are beautiful, but they can be a little cold if that’s all you choose to include in your gallery wall.
- Go Black & White. Photo gallery walls can be intimidating because usually you have several different hues and eras of photo you want to include, and you’re worried these varied contrasts will look sloppy.
- Match Your Frames. The next thing you can do for cohesion is to choose matching frames. They can be the exact same frames like the examples above, and hung in a grid layout, which always looks great.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Mat. Nothing elevates a gallery wall like matting. In this case, size matters. The bigger, the more dramatic the effect. Oftentimes the matting that comes with the frame will work just fine.
