A throwback to the pained, poetic films of the 1970s, Out of the Furnace is set in the fading Pennsylvania steel town of Braddock and follows Russell Baze (Christian Bale), a well-meaning, hardworking blue collar guy seemingly destined for tragedy. Russell works in the local mill, helps look after his terminally ill dad, loves his girlfriend Lena (Zoe Saldana), and worries about the gambling habits of his ne'er-do-well kid brother Rodney (Casey Affleck), an Army veteran about to be stop-lossed into his fourth tour of duty in Iraq at the time we meet him.

Rodney refuses to work in the mill like his brother and father before him, and his pain from what he's seen and done in war drives him to numb it through bare-knuckle brawling for local bookie John Petty (Willem Dafoe). Rodney wants to make more money, though, so he forces Petty to set up a fight for him in the more dangerous, but better paying backwoods bouts run by the loony, hillbilly drug lord Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson).

Rodney's fateful decision leads to bloodshed and causes repercussions for Russell, an ex-con who in the meantime loses Lena to the local sheriff (Forest Whitaker) and sees the town mill closed due to the economy.

The Scott Cooper and Brad Ingelsby-scripted Out of the Furnace is most certainly not the feel good movie of the year; indeed, it makes Prisoners seem jovial by comparison. This is an American tragedy through and through, a deterministic tale about a good man whose mistakes and decisions ultimately cost him the things he values most in life and where justice is as scarce as a good job. Director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), himself an actor, coaxes stellar performances from his three leads.

The somber, Out of the Furnace boasts top-notch performances from Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, and Woody Harrelson in a tale often as violent as it is poignant.
