One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a 1975 American psychological drama film [4] directed by Miloš Forman, based on the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. The film stars Jack Nicholson as a new patient at a mental institution , alongside Louise Fletcher as the domineering head nurse.
Forman was given a second chance to work in America when actor and producer Michael Douglas offered him the chance to make a film adaptation of Ken Kesey’s cult novel “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. The independently produced film surprised everyone involved when it earned nearly $300 million worldwide.

While the film is generally regarded a cinematic masterpiece, Ken Kesey has vowed he will never view it due to disputes with the film's producers, Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz. Douglas's father, the actor Kirk Douglas, was the first actor to portray McMurphy in the 1960s stage version of the novel.
