Mar 31, 2024 · Before the buildings’ completion in 1912, Omaha High School—renamed Omaha Central High School in 1915—had to decide what to do about the iconic clock tower rising from the old building’s center. The 185-foot-tall monolith had historical significance.
Central High, with roots dating back to Omaha's first all-grade public school in 1859, is a testament to the city's commitment to education. The journey continued with establishing a dedicated high school building in 1871, a building that would evolve and shape the educational landscape of Omaha.

It is one of many public high schools located in Omaha. As of the 2015–16 academic year, Omaha Central had an enrollment of 2,552 students. [2] The current building, located in Downtown Omaha, was designed by John Latenser, Sr. and was built between 1900 and 1912. It is the oldest active high school building in the city. [3]
High school continued at Jefferson Square under Principal John Kellom, then moved to Jackson Street between 14th and 15th, then (in 1872) to new building on Capitol Hill. First permanent public high school in Omaha. In 1871 there were 3,378 children of school age in Omaha, only 2,496 in school.
