Plot. After the death of his son at the front, and his wife's demise, widower waiter Skorohodov rents his room to Sokolin, a young man who works as a messenger in one of the offices.
Plot. The first novella of the anthology – "Anna on the Neck" – is the story of Anna Petrovna (Maria Strelkova), who has at a young age become the wife of middle-aged venerable official Modest Alexeyevich (Michael Tarhanov).
