Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit that enables a believer in Christ to speak in an unknown language directly to God. The Bible calls it speaking mysteries in the spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2). This language cannot be understood with the mind, only the spirit. The apostle Paul says that when he prays in tongues it’s his spirit praying (1 Cor 14:14). That’s why many refer to this kind of tongues as “praying in the spirit”. (Jude 1:20).
