The entire opening act of The Living Daylights is a near-perfect adaptation of Ian Fleming's short story of the same name - with the location updated for the 1980s audience. Kara Milovy (the cello-playing assassin) is called Trigger in the short story, which ends when Bond disarms.

- From Russia With Love. A notable entry in the series and one of John F. Kennedy's favorite novels, From Russia With Love still holds a lot of influence over the shape of the Bond franchise today.
- For Your Eyes Only. Another interesting example of adaptation is For Your Eyes Only, as it takes cues and plot points from not one, but two Fleming short stories.
- Diamonds Are Forever. The final Bond film Sean Connery would appear in and one of the more interesting attempts at adaptation, Diamonds are Forever is an example of maintaining plot points and characters, but not the general vibe or tone of an adapted work.
- Casino Royale. The history of Casino Royale is a very interesting one. It's the very first Bond book that was published, and attempts were made to adapt it to the screen many times over the years, but it only just happened with the Daniel Craig reboot in 2006.
- Dr. No / From Russia with Love / Goldfinger. With the rights to the first Bond novel Casino Royale unavailable, Eon producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman seemed to give up pretty quickly on any idea of filming the novels in order.
- Thunderball / You Only Live Twice / On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The fourth film in the 007 series, Thunderball, actually stays pretty close to the book as well, echoing the first three films in that regard.
- Diamonds Are Forever / Live and Let Die. The next two movies were transitional ones for the 007 franchise. They marked Sean Connery’s I-mean-it-this-time exit from the series (although he donned the tux once more in the non-canon Never Say Never Again) and Roger Moore’s arrival, which also precipitated a further slide into camp and comedy.
- The Man with the Golden Gun. Moore’s second outing as 007 was based on the 12th and last Bond novel that Fleming completed before his death in 1964, and it’s where the movies departed almost completely from the published canon for years.
