Nizhny Novgorod (/ ˌnɪʒniˈnɒvɡərɒd / NIZH-nee NOV-gə-rod; [ 14 ] Russian: Нижний Новгород, IPA: [ˈnʲiʐnʲɪj ˈnovɡərət] ⓘ, lit. 'Lower Newtown'; colloquially shortened to Nizhny) [ a ] is the administrative centre of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and the Volga Federal District in Russia.
