The fifth largest city in Russia is situated on the confluence of the Volga and the Oka rivers, about one-hour flight, or 420 km (260 mi) by road, east of Moscow. The city is the administrative center of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (or Nizhegorod Oblast), a region in European Russia.
