Newnham College is a women's constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college was founded in 1871 by a group organising Lectures for Ladies, members of which included philosopher Henry Sidgwick and suffragist campaigner Millicent Garrett Fawcett. It was the second women's college to be founded at Cambridge, following Girton College.
We remain proudly a women’s college today. The college has a mixture of beautiful historic and contemporary buildings, set in stunning gardens. We are located by the University’s Sidgwick site and University Library, and about 10 minutes walk from the historic centre of Cambridge.

Newnham began as a house for five students in Regent Street in Cambridge in 1871. Lectures for Ladies had been started in Cambridge in 1870.

Newnham College from Peile Hall. Of particular interest are The Clough Gates. Anne Jemima Clough is commemorated in these bronze gates. It was she who was invited by Henry Sidgwick in 1871 to take charge of a house in town for a group of young women who attended his lectures.
