For chronic muscle and joint pain, effective therapies include rest, ice and heat, anti-inflammatory medications, and time. However, the pain may be coming from irritated nerves along with the injured muscle or joint.

Often discomfort is only arising from nerve pain which has sharp stinging pain or radiates to adjacent areas; typical cause is diabetes but can also be brought on by injury, infection and some medications.

In neuropathic pain the nerve that was a mere messenger of pain now becomes the actual source; narcotic relievers don't often help so there are other options such as drugs developed for depression/seizure disorders to damp down excessive/inappropriate signals in nerves.

A variety of drugs can be added to conventional relievers to reduce nerve pain including anticonvulsants (control seizures) & antidepressants (treat depression). It takes 3-4 weeks for full effect with low dose gradually increased reducing side effects.

Learn about different types of drugs that can help reduce nerve pain caused by diabetes, injury, infection, or other conditions. Find out how anticonvulsants, antidepressants, and other medications work and what side effects they may have.
