Hicks' death scene on the railroad tracks at the film's conclusion is directly based on Cassady's death along a railroad track outside of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, in 1968.
The film explores the love triangle of real-life characters Neal Cassady, Jack Kerouac, and Carolyn Cassady in the late 1950s and the 1960s. It chronicles Kerouac writing his seminal novel On the Road, and its effect on their lives.
Cassady served many stints in reform school for car theft, claiming to have stolen 500 cars by the time he was 18. Cassady met Kerouac and Ginsberg in 1946 through mutual friend Hal Chase, who was from Colorado and told them stories of this remarkable Westerner from Denver.

The story is based on the years Kerouac spent travelling the United States in the late 1940s with his friend Neal Cassady and several other Beat Generation figures who would go on to fame in their own right, including William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg.
