Oct 24, 2016 · During the Roman Empire, Mediana used to be a luxury suburb of Naissus, present-day Nis. Mediana was built between the end of the 3rd Century and the beginning of the 4th Century.

The Romans built the Via Militaris in the 1st century, with Naissus being one of the key towns. Niš is also notable as the birthplace of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman Emperor and the founder of Constantinople, as well as Constantius III.
The Antique Naissus, today’s city of Niš (SRB), flourished in the fertile valley of the river Nišava, in central parts of Moesia Superior. The settlement of the local people obtained the status of municipium in the 2nd century.

Following a Roman victory over the Dardani who occupied the region, the town was founded in the late 1st c. B.C. as a central base for Roman legions. When the province of Moesia Superior was organized in A.D. 15, Naissus became an increasingly important commercial and military center.
