Music From Great Shakespeare Films Country Great Britain Format LP Release Date 1975 National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernard Herrmann. Stereo. Liner notes by Christopher Palmer. Also contains music from: Gamlet Julius Caesar Richard III
- Chimes at Midnight (1965) Film. Drama. Atop our list sits Orson Welles, further negating the perception that Citizen Kane was his only masterpiece. (Chimes was the director's personal favorite of all his films—the one he hoped to "get into heaven" with.)
- Macbeth (1971) Film. A tragedy was born out of tragedy: Reeling from the murder of his wife Sharon Tate by members of the Manson cult, Roman Polanski embarked on this harrowing adaptation of Shakespeare's tale of a doom-laden Scottish royal (Jon Finch).
- Ran (1985) Film. Action and adventure. Merging King Lear with legends of an actual 16th-century Japanese warlord, Akira Kurosawa marshals more than a thousand extras into a magisterial pageant of blood: bright primary colors clashing on behalf of leaders who are uniformly unworthy.
- Othello (1952) Film. Drama. Filmed sporadically over three years in Morocco and Italy, Orson Welles's 90-minute account of the Venetian Moor who loved not wisely but too well is another of his famously troubled projects.
- A Midsummer’s Nights Dream (1935) Though the Bard’s works are well known, Shakespeare is rarely big business in the movie world, certainly not in the U.S. Classic Hollywood really didn’t invest many dollars in the playwright’s works.
- Romeo and Juliet (1936) The year after A Midsummer Nights Dream, M.G.M decided to show how it should be done with a lavish production of what may well be the most popular of Shakespeare’s works.
- Romeo and Juliet (1954) As seen by looking at the dates on these entries, almost twenty years would pass before another English-language film version of Romeo and Juliet would again be mounted.
- Romeo and Juliet (1968) Finally a hit! Italian director Franco Zeffirelli is often all at sea with contemporary pieces but give him Shakespeare or an opera to film and there is none better.
