Milk Tray', was clearly inspired by the James Bond films. It was first seen on British TV screens in 1968. Remarkably, rather like the Bond casting sequence, only four men performed as the mysterious delivery man over the 40-year life of the advert. The first Milk Tray man was actor Gary Myers who performed the role between 1968 and 1984.

Oct 22, 2015 · October 22, 2015. Phosphor Art’s Pastiche artist Jon Rogers has been working hard on several paintings which star in the new Cadbury Milk Tray advert. The advert features 1987’s Milk Tray Man James Coombes explaining the old ads in which the James Bond style character was seen risking his life to deliver a box of milk try to the lady he loves.
The Darcy / Milk Tray Man connection is reinforced by the interest shown in him by retailers, publishers and other media. In 2008 freshfiction.com ran a competition, the prize for which was a signed copy of Gwyn Cready’s time-travelling romance Seducing Mr Darcy, plus a box of Pride and Prejudice themed truffles from Dos chocolatier in New York.
At the heart of Cadbury Milk Tray’s heritage is the iconic Milk Tray Man, a much loved Bond-esque character. But since he had been retired, the 25 – 55 year old consumer audience did not have the same level of nostalgia towards the iconic hero. And on the eve of its 100th birthday, Cadbury Milk Tray had room for improvement.

With the rise of James Bond in 1963, Cadbury came up with their own incarnation - the 'Milk Tray Man'. Who else would be able to go to the extreme lengths in order to deliver a Milk Tray? Much like the Flake Girls, the Milk Tray Men campaign ended, only to be brought back again due to public popularity, with an official (and successful) hunt for the new Milk Tray Man in 2016.
