Menashe (Yiddish: מנשה) is a 2017 Yiddish-language American drama film directed by Joshua Z. Weinstein. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017, where it was acquired by A24 for U.S. distribution. The film was released in the United States on July 28, 2017.
Co-writer/director Joshua Z. Weinstein’s film achieves this initially by putting a soulful gaze on a world we rarely see in American film, the Hasidic community of New York City, using non-actors who speak entirely in Yiddish. But the emotional focus is what makes the film so incredibly special.
A sweet, quiet and unpretentious, culturally specific yet universal portrait of fatherhood in a culture rarely depicted on film, Menashe marks a sympathetic and tender, if a bit too brisk and restrained first feature from Joshua Z. Weinstein.
