Dr Iain McCallum was the original lead character, played by Scottish actor John Hannah. McCallum is a forensic pathologist working in the morgue of St. Patrick's Hospital in London's East End, [1] who travels by Triumph Motorcycle, is generally charming and solves murders.
McCallum, finding himself unable to cope with his estrangement from Joanna and the pressures placed upon him by his work, walks away from a crime scene. McCallum's absence results in Maloney working an extra shift, even though it means she will have gone without sleep for more than 48 hours.

With series lead Mark Harmon's departure from the show in the fall of 2021 (Season 19), McCallum became the last remaining member of the original NCIS cast until his death in 2023. The Season 21 episode, "The Stories We Leave Behind", is a posthumous tribute to both McCallum and to Dr. Mallard.
