The Mauthausen concentration camp was established shortly after the German annexation of Austria (1938). Prisoners in the camp were forced to perform crushing labor in a nearby stone quarry and, later, to construct subterranean tunnels for rocket assembly factories.

A relatively large collection of original documents created by the camp administration has survived from the Mauthausen concentration camp. Despite the destruction of these documents of mass murder ordered by the SS, numerous important sources were saved from destruction, primarily by the prisoners themselves.

Mauthausen was a German Nazi concentration camp on a hill above the market town of Mauthausen (roughly 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Linz), Upper Austria. It was the main camp of a group with nearly 100 further subcamps located throughout Austria and southern Germany.
