Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

The second episode of Agent Carter was directed by none other than Joe Russo, co-director (with his brother, Anthony) of Captain America: The Winter Soldier – not to mention a ton of great TV via Arrested Development and Community.

Not surprisingly, Russo did strong work with his installment, which included the clever inclusion of The Captain America Adventure Hour radio show (brought to you by Roxxon Oil!) as a through-line. The radio show worked well on several levels, allowing the show to present a very typical piece of entertainment of that era but also framing it within this universe where Captain America was real – which obviously makes it tough for Peggy to hear, given it was making light entertainment of the man she loved and lost and also presenting the only woman in his life as a shrieking damsel in distress. And then, on a more visceral level, you had the terrific intercutting of the fake radio show violence with the very real fighting going on.

I also hope they flesh out the guys Peggy works with soon. The inclusion of Kyle Bornheimer as the lunk-headed Ray Krzeminsk feels extraneous right now, as we still don’t know a ton about what make Thompson and Dooley tick (though we do now see Thompson is the go-to guy for torture), with Sousa at least getting a bit more of the spotlight.

Meanwhile though, Jarvis and Peggy’s partnership continued to be a blast, and James D’Arcy is nailing lines like, “Should I leave the engine running in case you cause another implosion?” The two also had a really nice, sweet scene together where Jarvis advised her to not act so distant. The line, “From what Mr. Stark told me, Captain Rogers relied heavily on you” held a lot of weight, conveying affection towards Peggy, in one fell swoop, from Jarvis, Howard and Steve.

Jarvis also getting more directly involved in the action provided a lot of fun as well, as we saw that he’s not exactly battle-ready, but at least battle-willing, as he blindly shot his gun.

We saw more of Lyndsy Fonseca in this episode as Angie and she's quickly proving to be a very endearing, vivacious part of this series, nailing lines like “I’d be your neighbor, so that’s not nothin’!” and the perfectly delivered “That’s Sarah, she’s a slut!”

    Some other tidbits:

-It's a nice, suitably anxiety-adding touch to have Peggy's "secret identity" in danger of being found out, first through those photos and, by the end of the episode, via that license plate.

The second Agent Carter episode continued on solid footing, as Peggy’s relationships with Jarvis and Angie showed us more of her personal connections. Hopefully her office cohorts can become more fully formed going forward, but Peggy’s world – Captain America radio dramas included – is one worth spending more time in.
