  4. Oct 24, 2023 · The types of materials used requires scrutiny. Paintings on canvas are likely to be more valuable, indeed a close examination of the backing can reveal details about the age. X or H shaped frames are typical of older paintings, while a canvas that has been attached with nails rather than staples is likely to be pre 1940 and therefore of some age.

    • Artist. We are looking for a variety of artists. In general, most artists have had formal art training at art collage or in the studio of professional artists.
    • Subject. We will consider any subject but ideally we are looking for typical subjects from a particular artist which collectors prefer. For marine painting well known landmarks and famous ships and yachts are more desirable than boats on an open sea or near an unidentified cost.
    • Condition. Oil paintings and their signatures are inspected using various techniques including UV light in our art gallery studio to check for overpainting and later editions.
    • Provenance. For all pictures we research the provenance and history of the item from exhibition labels and supporting documentation. We search for previous sale data, exhibitions, gallery catalogues and the Art Loss Register.
  5. Use an online image search or reverse image search to check whether your painting is a copy of an existing artwork. Good quality painted copies are often worth more than prints. If it is a print, it may still be worth something. Certain limited edition prints are worth more than normal prints.
