When the Lord commanded the Saints to build a temple in Kirtland, He taught them about the building’s purpose. “Establish a house,” He directed, “even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God” (D&C 88:119).

The dedication of the House of the Lord in Kirtland on March 27, 1836, set a pattern for future temple dedications. The day-long ceremony included speeches, music, the administration of the sacrament, a dedicatory prayer, and the Hosanna Shout.
