Sylvester McCoy wished he'd been brave enough to give Ken Dodd direction on how to play his death scene, which was over the top. Malcolm Kohll came up with the look of the Bannermen from the faceless banner-carrying armies in balletic King Hu films. John Nathan-Turner said that this story was as close as Doctor Who got to being a musical.
