Feb 2, 2017 · Now, after finally reading this brilliant book, I can say without exaggeration that I consider it one of my favourite books ever!!! Osamu Dazai (1909-1948) wrote his second novel, a dark and disturbing work of art – No Longer Human, in a state of frenzy, some suggested he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Part 1: "Underground" The first part of Notes from Underground has eleven sections: Section I propounds a number of riddles whose meanings are further developed as the narration continues. Sections 2, 3, & 4 deal with suering and the irrational pleasure of suering.
ADMIN MOD. Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground is the best depiction of anxiety I've read. I started reading it this morning and am only halfway through the book and it's already one of my top books despite being one of the shorter Dostoevsky novels. The way he is self aware, yet perfectly explains the thought process of someone with anxiety.
I read Notes about 3 years ago, so my recollection isn't detailed. But I remember having an interpretation of the underground man's identity as an intellectual of the old order whose traditionalist basis of understanding the world was being eroded and defiled by the forces of modernity creeping in from Western Europe.
