Jul 9, 2022 · Overall, the South of France has it all: a rich heritage and steeped history, Provençal countryside villages and markets, and sparkly white beaches with azure coves. The big blue beckons on any trip here, with some of the most idyllic, exclusive and elusive spots aligned together.
- Atlantic / Aquitaine. The extensive sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast between Biarritz and Arcachon will suit those who want sunshine and plenty of space and to avoid the crowds of the Riviera.

- Vendée. Those with small children will like the extensive sandy and gently sloping beaches of the Vendee (western France), or the beaches on the islands off the west coast of France such as the Ile-de-Ré.
- Normandy. You will find extensive sandy and family friendly beaches in Normandy and the coast of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, and the famous Normandy Landing beaches, as well as some lovely resorts developed in the early 20th century.
- Barneville, Barneville-Carteret, Normandy. Both sides of these twinned towns have good stretches of sand, but visitors who prefer to stay right beside a beach should head for Barneville, directly across the mouth of the bay.
- Utah Beach, Normandy. This, the westernmost of the Invasion Beaches is steeped in history. On D-Day, 23,000 men and 1700 vehicles landed here. A minor coast road traces the edge of the dunes and enables visitors to follow the course of the fighting.
- Wissant, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Some 20km south of Calais, Wissant is a small, attractive place, popular with windsurfers and weekending Britons drawn to its enormous beach.
- Les Sables-D’Olonne, Pays de la Loire. Although the town fringes are rather overdeveloped, the centre of Les Sables-D’Olonne retains some of its gaudy charm and is a popular destination for its vast curve of pristine beach.
- Trouville-sur-Mer. If you fancy walking an endless stretch of wild coastline, backed by wildlife-filled dunes, then Trouville-sur-Mer is the spot for you!
- Honfleur. This vibrant town on the Normandy coast just oozes authentic French charm. The stone-clad harbour is a wonderful place to stroll and you can watch the activity on the water over the rim of your coffee cup or a wine glass at a local cafe.
- Menton. Right on the border with Italy, Menton feels world’s away from Nice and Cannes along the French Riviera. It has its own micro-climate, is famous for its lemons… plus there’s a benefit to being so close to Italy – you can hop across the border for some fresh Italian produce!
- Saint-Malo. If you’ve ever imagined visiting a perfect French seaside town, Saint-Malo might just be that place. Surrounded on three sides by the ocean, this ancient Breton town (the Romans founded it in 100 BC) has spires, narrow cobbled streets and coastal charm.
