    Make sure you have a support system in place to help you. I’m lucky enough to have an administrator that supports the way I teach and allows me to come to him if I ever need any help or ideas. Other educators (even in other subjects) can also be a great source of support.

    Make Mistakes!

    Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Often educators avoid the possibility of making any mistakes not to create an ego disturbance. They view themselves in a certain way and do not want to try something new that would cause this view to be altered. As professionals, we must get over such discomforts for the sake of our learners.

    Teaching math this way is rewarding, exhausting, and completely necessary. The world is changing more now than it ever has. We need logical thinkers, creators, and modellers of abstract ideas and concepts. Mathematics provides an excellent way of promoting those skills. We, as educators, need to make sure we teach it that way.

    • Encourage students to figure out the answers, rather than telling them. Standing at a whiteboard, and trying to stuff knowledge into the heads of our students has been a traditional way of teaching maths but what would happen if we allowed students to discover things for themselves and direct their own learning?
    • Tasks about mathematical reasoning produce more lightbulb moments. Mathematical reasoning tasks encourage students to generate as many examples as possible.
    • Foster collaboration and communication through group tasks and teacher prompts. “Convince me” is one of the challenging prompts that you can use to promote collaboration when students are working on reasoning tasks in pairs or reporting to the whole class.
    • Like it or love it: it’s a part of the curriculum. Creative and critical thinking is a cross-curriculum priority in the Australian Curriculum. Creative thinking occurs when students generalise — noticing the relationships between common properties — and then create rules or conjectures that need to be tested.
