Monsieur Philippe I, Duke of Orléans (21 September 1640 – 9 June 1701) was the younger son of King Louis XIII of France and Anne of Austria, and the younger brother of King Louis XIV. He was the founder of the House of Orléans, a cadet branch of the ruling House of Bourbon.
Philippe de France, brother of Louis XIV, known as “Monsieur”, played no part in the political affairs of the kingdom. Known for preferring his male favourites to his wives, more at home in Paris than at Versailles, he won a famous military victory over William of Orange in 1677.

He was the younger brother of King Louis XIV (reigned 1643–1715), who prevented him from exercising political influence but tolerated him as an overtly respected and covertly despised figure at court.
Born Duke of Anjou, Philippe I became the Duke of Orleans in 1660 upon the death of his uncle Gaston, who had previously held the prestigious position. He later came to be known as the younger brother of the popular King Louis XIV, who was better known as the ‘Sun King.’
