Louis of France, the Grand Dauphin. 1663. Oil on canvas. Not on display. The eldest son of Louis XIV and the Spanish Infanta María Teresa of Austria, Louis was born in Fontainebleau, 01.11.1661, receiving the title of Dauphin as heir to the French throne.
Biography. The "Petit Dauphin", eldest son of Louis, le Grand Dauphin and grandson of Louis XIV. Married Marie-Adélaïde of Savoy (7 December 1697), who bore him the future Louis XV (q.v.). Briefly succeeded his father as Dauphin in 1711-12, but died before Louis XIV did, and never reigned.
