  6. For the idea that "God is dead" is first placed in the mouth of a madman (der tolle Mensch, 1974:181-182; KSA 111:480-482). Nietzsche takes no sophomoric delight in the idea, to be sure. The madman comes into an anonymous town square loking for God, only to meet with the derivisive laughter of those auditors who no longer believe in God.
