Louis-Auguste Blanqui (1805-1881) was one of the most important figures in nineteenth-century French revolutionary politics, and he played a role in all of the great upheavals that punctuated his life – the insurrections of 1830, 1848 and 1870-71.
The most detailed and informative biography of Blanqui is Alain Decaux’s Blanqui, L’Insurgé: La Passion de la révolution (1976); the most substantial biography in English is Samuel Bernstein’s Auguste Blanqui and the Art of Insurrection (1971).

The most heroic figure in the French socialist movement, he spent most of his life in prison. Louis Blanqui was born in Puget-Théniers, near Nice, on Feb. 1, 1805.
