Brown, against the wishes of his employers and the police, decides to pursue a private prosecution against Harris for murder, which is later reduced to manslaughter, whilst Harris' in-laws take against him - his father-in-law striking him in anger and despair - along with the local community.
John Harris finds himself ostracized and placed on trial for allowing his daughter Ruth to die.
