The Battle of Lexington (also known as the Battle of the Hemp Bales) (Sept. 18–20, 1861) resulted in a bloody victory for Confederate troops under Major General Sterling Price over the Union forces of Colonel James A. Mulligan.

By the time of the American Civil War, Lexington was a bustling and important city along the Missouri River in western Missouri. Because of the this, the United States Government wanted to control this strategic location and sent troops to occupy and hold the town.
